Top 10 UK Pest Infestation Signs
Most pests are invisible. They only come out at night and you will rarely know they are there until it’s too late. This means that, in order to spot pests, you need to look for signs of infestation. But what are the most common pest infestation signs in the UK?
Here are the most common pest infestation signs. If you see any of the following it could mean you are about to face a full-blown infestation and need pest control immediately.
1. Blocked gutters
Large numbers of birds on your roof will quickly lead to blocked gutters. This happens because they are shedding feathers. If your gutters are blocked it could be because of a bird infestation.
2. Waking up with bites
There are a number of UK pests which can bite you. The most common of these are bed bugs. If you’re experiencing bites it may also be fleas.
Droppings and urine marks are one of the most obvious pest infestation signs. This is usually a sign of rodents. These animals produce hundreds of droppings per day. These can be spotted in areas where they feed, and many times this will be in your cupboards. Their droppings are dark brown, oval shaped and taper towards the end. Cockroaches also leave behind droppings. These are tiny and look like coffee grains.
4. Noises at night
Rodents like rats, mice and squirrels may also cause a racket at night. This most often indicates that you have rodents in your roof. These noises will take the form of scurrying, screeching, or scratching.
5. Holes in clothing
Clothing which has holes may be the result of a moth infestation. This is especially true if the clothing is made out of wool, fur, silk, or leather. Also look for holes in your upholstery, rugs and carpets.
6. Gnaw marks
All rodents gnaw. These include rats, mice, and squirrels. Of the three, rats are the most guilty of this. This is because their teeth never stop growing which means they are forced to gnaw. Keep an eye out for gnaw marks, especially on the parts of your house which are made from wood or concrete. Also look out for gnaw marks on the items in your pantry to see if you have rats or mice.
7. Dead pests
Seeing dead pests are one of the biggest pest infestation signs. If you frequently see the bodies of pests like cockroaches or rodents, then you may have an infestation. You have to keep pests out of your home to protect your health.
Rodents also build nests. These are usually made out of cardboard and shredded bits of paper. They may also use leaves and grass. Look for these nests in your ceiling, beneath the floors, and in crevices
Many pests cause damage. This may be damage to the food in your pantry. Boxes of food may be torn apart. Damage can also include general damage to your home.
10. Grease and smear marks
Rodents usually take the same routes when they move about. Because these animals are filthy, they eventually leave dark marks on the areas they pass through.
